How to use the word finder

  1. Type your lettersType the letters on your rack or tiles. Order doesn't matter.
  2. Add blanksUse ? for a blank tile. Each one stands in for any letter.
  3. Narrow it downOpen Advanced options if a word has to start with, end with or contain certain letters. Those letters can come from the board rather than your rack, so you don't have to type them twice.
  4. Pick your gamePick Scrabble or Words With Friends to see the points next to each word, sort by length or points, or hide the scores.
  5. SearchPress Search. Results are grouped by length, longest first; the words most people know are listed first in each group. Tap any word to see its anagrams and every shorter word inside it.

Which tool should you use?

This page handles most things. For a few jobs a dedicated page is quicker:

Games it works for

  • SScrabble
  • WWords With Friends
  • WWordle
  • WWordscapes
  • WWord Cookies
  • BBoggle
  • JJumble
  • TText Twist
  • CCrosswords
  • WWord search

Any game with letters in it: Scrabble, Words With Friends, Wordscapes, Word Cookies, Boggle, Jumble, Text Twist, crosswords and word searches. For Wordle you'll usually want the length set to 5 and the known letters in the Contains or Starts with fields.

Which words count?

Our list is built from ENABLE, the open word list most word games are based on, with about 168,000 words. Proper nouns, abbreviations and hyphenated words are left out. Scrabble's official lists (NWL and Collins) are licensed and differ in a few hundred words, so if you play in tournaments, check a disputed word against the official dictionary.

Questions people ask

Is the word finder free?

Yes. You don't need an account or a download, and you can search as often as you like.

How many letters can I enter?

Up to 15, the longest word that fits on a standard Scrabble board, so you can include board letters you're building through.

Is using a word finder cheating?

In a casual game, that's between you and your opponent. Many players use one after a game to see what they missed, which is one of the quickest ways to get better. Tournament rules don't allow outside help during play.

Why doesn't a word I know show up?

Either it isn't in ENABLE (newer words sometimes aren't), or it needs a letter you didn't enter. If you think a word is missing, tell us and we'll check it.
